When it comes to maritime communication or train communication, stabilized antennas are key – they have to remain pointed at the satellite in order to ensure a constant flow of data, with regulations stating that an accuracy better than 0.5 is essential to maintain an active transmission.

These demands highlight the need for precise, highly accurate measurements for altitude and angular rate. This means that the antenna has to receive input from at least one orientation sensor in order to respond to changes in vehicle orientation.

Mechanical Sensors

As a low cost yet highly accurate gyro technology, vibrating gyros for measurement of Coriolis force are ideal solutions for platform stabilization applications. Micro-machined devices based on silicon or as they are known as MEMS are becoming less costly and increasingly capable. Colibrys MEMS accelerometers are ideal devices used in many platform stabilization application. Our new GS/GM1000 vibrating gyros offer best in class noise figures, which renders this device an ideal choice for many platform stabilization applications.

The Colibrys solution 

Our recommended sensor for this application is the GM1000 Gyro Module, a packaged version of the GS1000 housed in a miniature container with all its electronic components. Each GM1000 gyro is factory-calibrated and compensated for temperature effects in order to provide high-accuracy differential analogue output voltage or a 24-bit digital output through RS422 interface. Powered by a single 5 to 18Vdc supply for seamless integration, this unit has already proven operational in such demanding applications as remotely controlled weapon stations, camera platform stabilization, electro-optical platform stabilization with MTBF of 1.000.000 hours.

The GM1000 is the ideal gyro for weapons platform stabilization as it demonstrates excellent bias over temperature performance, unmatched performance in presence of vibration, low power consumption and rugged durability. Light weight, low-noise and excellent bias renders this device an ideal choice for platform stabilization applications.
